Very first review of “Apoi!calypse” tape EP by American Oi!

🇮🇹 Primissima recensione della cassetta EP Apoi!calypse, a cura di American Oi!

Siete pronti per un altro round di streetpunk misterioso e occulto dall’Italia? Fareste bene ad esserlo! Perché, a qualche mese di distanza dal singolo di debutto “Obey”, i misteriosi Unborn sono tornati per seminare di nuovo paura e terrore con la loro seconda uscita: l’EP “Apoi!calypse” pubblicato da Skinhead Sounds!

Uscito su cassetta, “Apoi!calypse” contiene quattro tracce, due delle quali, quelle sul lato A, sono nuovissime. I testi di “La Notte dei Morti Viventi” e “Hanno Cambiato Faccia”, in italiano, sono ispirati ai film horror omonimi, ai quali rendono omaggio. Gli Unborn ti squarceranno con melodie della chitarra taglienti come rasoi e con una batteria che ti darà l’impressione di essere preso a martellate in faccia, fornendo una colonna sonora di killer streetpunk adatta ad accompagnare i testi in questione!

Il lato B inizia con “They Live”. Se possiedi il singolo già menzionato, la canzone ti sembrerà familiare, ad ogni modo ci sono due differenze significative rispetto a quella versione. Il pezzo è stato registrato di nuovo e, mentre il testo dell’originale era completamente in inglese, le strofe di questa versione sono in italiano, e credo di apprezzare ancora di più la canzone in questa maniera. Mi piace anche l’outro, intitolato “”The Shape””. Si tratta di uno strumentale, nel quale le tastiere di Emiliano Natali creano un’atmosfera cupa e inquietante che a me piace. La prossima volta inserite delle tastiere anche su qualche altro brano, va bene? Va bene!

Non sono certo che “Apoi!calypse” sia stato pubblicato solo su cassetta (e su Bandcamp), ma mi auguro vivamente che esca anche su vinile. Sono occorse sei etichette affinché “Obey” potesse essere pubblicato, e non m’importa se stavolta ce ne vorranno quindici, ma sia la musica degli Unborn che l’eccellente artwork di Giorgio Santucci meritano di essere pubblicati su un formato che abbia almeno sette pollici di larghezza, quindi fatelo, prima che arrivi la vera apocalisse. Ready for another round of weird and occult streetpunk from Italy? You better be! Because only several months after their single sided debut single “Obey”, the unknown of The Unborn are back, striking fear and terror again through their second coming; the “Apoi!calypse” EP for Skinhead Sounds!

Released on cassette, “Apoi!calypse” holds four tracks of which the two on the A-side are brand new. Completely sung in Italian, the lyrics to “La Notte Dei Morti Viventi” and “Hanno Cambiato Faccia” are yet again inspired and / or are paying a tribute to horrifying cinema such as “Night Of The Living Dead” and “They Have Changed Their Face”. Slashing you up with some razor-sharp guitar melodies and drums that sound like you’re being smashed in the face with a hammer, The Unborn definitely provides a soundtrack of killer streetpunk to accompany these lyrics!

The B-side of the cassette kicks off with “They Live”. If you picked up the aforementioned single this track probably sounds familiar, but has two significant changes nonetheless. It’s re-recorded and while the original recording was completely in English, the verses (all six sentences) of this new version are now in Italian as well. I think I like it even better that way. What I also like is the outro, titled as “The Shape”. It’s an instrumental track, but the keyboards provided by Emiliano Natali create a gloomy, creepy atmosphere I can appreciate. Next time also try this on a regular track, okay? Okay.

I am not sure if “Apoi!calypse” is a cassette (and Bandcamp) only release, but I sure hope it will be released on vinyl as well. “Obey” took six labels to be released and I don’t care if it takes fifteen labels this time, both the music of The Unborn and the excellent artwork of Giorgio Santucci deserve a release on a format that is at least seven inches big. So make it happen. Before the real apocalypse comes. Thanks.
